With the average cost of a bathroom renovation in Australia now around $19,500, it’s definitely one of the pricier rooms in the home to update. But you can still create your dream bathroom on a smaller budget – here’s how…
There are many factors that impact the cost of a renovation. From timing to the getting the plans finalized and the complexity of trade work to quality of the materials used. All of which can be hard to navigate if your budget is on the smaller side. Here’s our guide on how to renovate a bathroom on a budget.
Keep the same layout
Retaining the bathroom’s existing size and ensuring that fixtures are kept in the same will instantly save on extra costs and time. That’s because if you decide to move the position of a shower, toilet, sink or bathtub, you’ll need to arrange re-plumbing of services, new waterproofing, and re-tiling of surfaces, all of which can blow out your budget.
Upcycle existing cabinetry
Rather than spending dollars on purchasing and installing a new bathroom vanity or cabinetry, simply update your existing one. Check the material of your cabinets first – different materials require different treatment and coverage – then give them a fresh lick of paint. It’s a great way to update a look for less than $100 in paint and sandpaper. And don’t forget, replace your old cabinet hardware with new stylish handles to complete the look!
If repurposing cabinetry isn’t an option, consider using pre-made vanities rather than custom made joinery, as this is usually a cheaper option.
Invest in new fixtures and fittings
If there’s one area to allocate a chunk of your budget to, it’s the fixtures and fittings in your bathroom as they can immediately transform the look and feel. They are also the most heavily used features in your bathroom, meaning it pays off to invest in these items.
We’re talking tapware, towel racks, shower heads, and shower rails – all of which can inject a huge amount of personality into your space. You could opt for a popular Basin Mixer, contemporary Vessel Mixer, or a Wall Mixer for a streamlined aesthetic. For a more traditional look, Tapware sets are a popular choice for family and master bathrooms.
When it comes to showers, again, there are myriad options including Ceiling Showers, Twin Showers, Rain Showers and more. Some are extremely easy to install and can be done so without a plumber. To keep the budget under control we would suggest an overhead shower on a wall arm or single rail shower which is height adjustable. For under $250 you can get something that looks great in your new bathroom. In terms of finishes, Chrome is the best value and really neutral so it goes with any tile selection. When you move into coloured tapware it cost approximately 50% more for matte black and double the price of chrome for Brushed Nickel or Gun Metal. Brushed Brass or Brushed Gold is a premium finish and can cost up to 3x the price of your chrome fittings.
And don’t forget accessories, choose towel rails and toilet roll holders that complements your tapware and shower. Again, chrome is the best value for money with many more shapes and style options than coloured finishes.
Rejuvenate your tiles
It’s no secret that tiles have a big impact on the overall aesthetic of your bathroom. And it’s also no secret that tiles can be pretty costly, especially when you factor in labour costs. For a budget friendly option, why not repaint over your existing tiled surface? You’ll need to clean, sand and prime your tiles first for the best outcome, but repainting is a great way to improve your space! You can also repaint both floor and wall tiles, depending on what needs sprucing up.
Don’t forget lighting
While less noticeable than paint colours or tile choices, lighting can make a huge difference to the ambience of your bathroom, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
LED lighting has come a long way, and there are endless options for style and price point. From light strips around mirrors to add that warm glow to recessed LED bulbs set in artistic designs, your new bathroom lighting can flow with the room like a piece of art (without the hefty price tag). Many LED lights can now connect to apps on your phone, this can also save your budget in the long run…if you forget to turn out the bathroom lights, you can just click into the app to turn it off from anywhere.
